“I’m going out of my mind”, “He’s beside himself” “He’s out of it” “I’m going nuts” “Off his rocker”
“Coming unglued” “Bent”
Sound familiar? All of these and similar expressions are metaphors but they give colorful clues as to what is happening with a person’s connection to his/her body and energy field.
One fundamental way to reduce stress and stay calm and collected is by grounding.
The human body is an electrochemical system. In some ways, the nervous system is like an electrical appliance, particularly a computer. The senses (eyes, ears, nose, tastebuds and skin) provide input which the brain processes and stores for retrieval. Like a computer, the nervous system needs grounding wires: its circuits can temporarily blow or malfunction if there is a surcharge of energy or overstimulation. Grounding can help you relax your body, think more clearly, manage emotions more effectively and increase your sense of well being.
WAYS TO GROUND THE HUMAN NERVOUS SYSTEM
1. Feel your feet. Feel the soles of your feet make contact with your shoes, and your
shoes contact the floor or the ground.
2.Feel your weight. Feel it solidly supported by the ground.
3. Mentally project your body energy down into the ground. Note: Directing body energy is what lets a karate master break bricks, thick wood, etc. High speed photography reduced to slow motion shows the bricks /wood etc. breaking BEFORE the moment of impact, even where there are careful controls to rule out any possibility of fraud or deception.
4. You can help yourself project your energy into the ground by using imagery:
ex. tree roots going down into the ground from the trunk of your body, a grounding cord going down into the ground from your tail bone, etc.
Note: Some Native American tribes taught their members to effectively release physical pain, emotional upset, and even some fevers down their body, through their feet into the ground.
Hi Kathy,
I really needed to hear this today! Also the post about breathing. I’m feeling really stressed and anxious this afternoon. I think it’s bout my final tonight, so this was a great reminder of how to deal with those feelings. Thank you! Being stressed will not help me do better on the test. And how wonderful to read this post just when I needed it!
